Health providers and other authority figures are now concerned about children’s obesity rates shown during the past 3-4 decades. They have now drawn a close connection between fast food and obesity and identified a childhood obesity epidemic with increased negative health factors. According to the American journal of public health, 2005 September issue, fast food retail sales in the United States have increased 900% from $16. 1 billion in 1975 to a projected $153. 1 billion in 2004, during the past 3 decades. The numbers of fast food restaurants targeting child and adolescent customers are found to be clustered around schools. With the addicting flavors and affordability of fast food has contributed to adjusting the young minds gradually to grab the quick lunch without second thought. Apart from the many types of fast food offered inside the school cafeteria, Studies have shown the fast food restaurant outlets are multiplying around the school grounds and neighborhood. The American Journal of Public Health estimated that there are 3 to 4 times as many fast-food restaurants within 1. km from schools than would be expected if the restaurants were located around the city in a way unrelated to schools. They also reveals that the median distance between any school to the nearest fast food restaurant is only 0. 5km, which means, there is only a walk of little more than 5 mints for any kid to grab that delicious treat. Some schools in the nation have already begun the fight against the fast food epidemic, although they’re a much less percentage of the whole. In his book Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser describes the history of child marketing explaining the concept of ‘kid kustomers’ McDonalds was the first fast food chain to direct their marketing towards kids. The portion size was drastically increased over the past couple of decades, bringing the once ‘Large’ size portion as the now ‘small’ size and having 5 categories as small, medium, large, supersize and combo meals in the ascending order. The trick is, every time you go for the next bigger portion, the customers are made believe that they get more for less price, in turn making the sale a worthwhile exchange. Since it is all about the visual of it, the customers tend to over look that whether it is more for less, it is all too much than what anybody needs to consume per meal. Fast food tastes best when they are fresh out of the restaurant. No matter how big the portion is, fast food can be hardly eaten as leftovers. So children have gradually trained their stomachs-adults likewise-to hold fattier, oily, sugary foods that come in super sizes. The initial issue seemed to be just being overweight and obese, as these children who consume more fatty foods than necessary grew up to be a fat generation of adults. She also explains by 2004 diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States and is the main contributor to health problems like heart disease, stroke, blindness, high blood pressure, kidney disease and amputation which occurs with increased frequency in overweight children and adolescents. Although many fast food restaurant businesses argue that they do not serve unhealthy food to their customers, the fact remains that since the rise of fast food restaurants, the obesity epidemic has only grown alarmingly. And as mentioned before, the portion size has massively increased, contributing to this epidemic every step of the way. This is now not just a concern of individual willpower but also a fight to save the nation as a whole. Studies show that children can be brain washed to believe in anything with little incentives. With the fast food industry being the top manipulators of children’s mind, they keep stuffing themselves with the mouth watering hamburgers, fries and shakes. Apart from these critical health problems, obesity brings in other issues to a child’s life. David Ludwig, an associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School has dedicated his life to researching and contributing to overweight reduction in children. He is the director of the Optimal Weight for Life (OWL) program at Children’s Hospital Boston, one of the largest clinics for overweight children and their parents. In his book, Ending the Food Fight, Lundwig explains the Vicious Cycle of poor diet and inactive life style which fosters many other negative factors in between. He lays out a great picture of poor diet that resembles over eating, that lowers metabolism, resulting in sluggishness and low motivation leading to an inactive lifestyle. Once this life style is acquired, the amount of calories stored in the body increases, causes fatigue and boredom, results in low self esteem that succumbs to temptation for ‘comfort food’ which contributes again to the poor diet that started out the cycle. He also explains in detail how obesity due to high-glycemic food intake-the type of food available at fast food restaurants-result in complications in a child in his/her Brain, Heart and blood vessels, lungs, digestive tract, hormones and also mental health. Obesity is also a key factor in most children’s self esteem and performance levels. Dr. Sylvia Rimm, a Child Psychologist and clinical professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine describes in detail the contribution of Obesity in depression and quality of life of children. She mentions â€Å"In a nationally representative survey conducted in 1996-1998, researchers reported that more than 60% of kids ate 5 servings of food fruits and vegetables a day. Unfortunately these results were based on a broad range of vegetables that included potatoes. † In illuminating potatoes from the vegetable group, Sylvia states, â€Å"children who consumed five servings of fruits and vegetables a day dropped to 30%. † This means the consumption of fast food is quite often as the most popular method of potato intake is through fries and fries are often not consumed by itself. The emotional lives of young children which is critical to having healthy physical and mental conditions in future is also subjected to being obese/overweight resulted in too much unsuitable food intake. Being from a South Asian country, I myself have faced the discomfort of fast food addiction as I grew up. I preferred less activity and ate out more times a week than necessary and ended up with low self esteem during my high school years. I was bullied; I did not have guys who were at all interested in me or even good grades. I am just one person who went through this painful process of growing up with too much ‘tasty food. ’ But I know there are many more who are entangled in the same web. It is not easy to wake up one day and say to yourself, I’m not going to be discouraged. We need help. And if as a whole world people need to stand up for the root of the problem, fast food, then isn’t it worth the try?

In view of these, this paper will attempt to evaluate the articles listed above whether they are biased or non-biased sources by discussing the main issues raised by these sources. At the end the paper will conclude whether these sources are biased or not, based on the careful analysis of the content of each of these articles. Discussion of the articles In the first article, the main issue is the mandatory minimum sentence imposed on persons convicted of possessing half a kilogram of cocaine powder or more to at least five years imprisonment. The authors cited that this mandatory minimum have a strong bipartisan support from elected representatives and even from presidential candidates. While there are pros and cons in this issue, in view of the authors the mandatory minimum sentence can be viewed as means of attaining the country’s drug control objectives (Caulkins, J. P. ; Rydell, P. ; Schwabe, W. L. ; & Chiesa, J. 1997, par. 3). Controlling drug use in the country could be a welcome objective as often times; guns and violence are linked with drug use. According to Scott Newark in his article entitled â€Å"The 2006 Crime Stats Analysis- Time for the Truth† drugs like cocaine, heroin, and crystal meth are astoundingly 21% up over the past five years (Newark, par. 17). While the authors discussed and considered other available alternatives on easing drug problems, their opinion were focused on reducing drug consumption rather than its impact on the society. Thus, they put more emphasis on treating heavy users than on the criminal offenses associated with the use of illegal drugs. The Second Article, written by Steven Levitt, primarily deals with the decline of crimes in America. Levitt pointed out that while most experts are predicting an explosion of crime during the early and middle of the 1990s, crime rates plunged precisely at this expected period and authorities were not anticipating it to happen. Levitt refused to attribute this decline to the popular perceptions like increased imprisonment, tougher gun control laws, strong economy, and so forth. Levitt was not surprised by this turn of events rather he questioned why the decline of criminality did not happen earlier.  (p. 164). According to Levitt, what is remarkable with the decline of crimes in the USA during this period was it magnitude from the 1950 to 2001. Of all the criminal offenses, Levitt identified homicide as the most serious crime that had experienced the biggest drop between 1991 and 2000, from 9. 8 to 5. 5 or a drop of forty-four percent. While Levitt focus in his article was to identify the real causes of the decline of criminal offenses in the US during the period from 1991 to 2001, he seemed to have to fail to categorically identify the real causes of such decline. Instead he shifted his emphasis on the remarkable aspect of this decline. He noted that this decline appeared unusual compared with other countries in the world, in which most of the most common criminal offenses such as homicide, robbery, and burglary experienced sharp decline from 1991 to 2000. The author also discussed the universality of this drop in crime citing decline in each subgroups for all crime categories (p. 167). However, at the end of the article, the author recognizes six factors namely, the strong economy, the changing demographics, better policing strategies, gun control laws, laws allowing the carrying of cancelled weapons, and increased of capital punishment that according to Levitt, played little or no role in the crime drop. He also acknowledge the four factors that explained the decline of crime such as the increase in number of police, the rising prison population, the receding crack epidemic and the legalization of abortion. The last article, by Scott Newark, deals with crime statistics which was accordingly â€Å"disappointing without critical analysis by the media† (par. 3). Contrary to the article by Steven Levitt, Newark’s Crime Stat Analysis reveals the other side of police records of criminal offenses. While Newark was talking of the crime rates in Canada, he noted indirectly that recorded crimes are only the most serious ones suggesting that there are more crimes unreported, aside from those that were not recorded by the statistic gatherer. This means that Levitt’s account of crime drop in the United States is clouded with doubts, indeed, according to the United States Crime Rates 1960-2007, in 2000 United States was ranked as â€Å"22nd having highest Criminal Index† (United States Crime Rates). From the way it looks, Newark’s article was a fair assessment of the reality of criminal offenses and offenders. He emphasized that it is unrealistic to spend billions of dollars with the rehabilitation of serious offenders who when released, will commit the same crime again. Conclusion The three articles discussed in this paper provided basic ideas about criminal offenses. Although the paper did not give a clear stand in each of the articles discussed, it leaves the paper a debatable issue regarding the seemingly contradicting views between the reality of crimes and offenses in Canada and the United States as revealed by Levitt and Newark respectively. However, while the three authors have different views and emphasized on different aspects of criminal offenses, it was clear that their common objective is to shed light on issues that they deemed needed to be pointed out to the public. Quality of Sources The first article entitled Mandatory Minimum Drug Sentences: Throwing Away the Key or the Taxpayers’ Money by Jonathan P. Caulkins, C. Peter Rydell. William L. Schwabe and James Chiesa, was biased in the sense that the authors appeared to one sided in their opinion. They seemed to focus merely on reducing drug consumption without giving due consideration to the implication of drug related offenses. This seemed to promote sympathy of the heavy user, rather on the consequence of violating the law. This is quite tantamount to tolerating the use of illegal drugs and then rehabilitates the users later on. The second article, Understanding Why Crime Fell in the 1990s: Four Factors that Explain the Deadline and Six that Do not by Steven Levitt is not biased article in view of its critical and balanced presentation of facts and evidences. Although The article appeared surprising given the sharp decline of crimes in the US amidst the proliferation drugs in the inner cities of America as cited in an internet article entitled â€Å"Operation SOS. † The article noted the proliferation of drugs in the city causing violent crimes in the neighborhood (Operation SOS) yet the author was able to shed lights on all sides affecting the issues being discussed. It was surprising to see the variance in social class centred on the race or diverse divisions of Islam. I knew that Sunni and Shi’a had problems but I did not know to what extent. It was fascinating to learn that Sunni and Shi’a had difficulties but I did not know to what level. There is so much history and culture in the novel revealed but still the novel has a beautiful and inspiring story (Hosseini, 8). In conclusion, the relationships between the characters in this novel are filled with so many sentiments. Every character has his/her own division and significance, which keeps the reader amused. When these divisions are organised, it makes the novel to be interesting. I have to say that my preferred portions were the sections that show the situations of war during the Taliban control. Many of the actions are filled with suspense. The parts with action in the novel made me not to stop reading it. This novel is really a page-turner and I endorse it highly to all readers in high school

The Scarlet Letter Book Report 1. What is the book about? This book is about a woman named Hester Prynne, who committed adultery with a successful clergyman named Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester Prynne was already married to an older doctor, who later called himself Roger Chillingworth. Hester and Reverend Dimmesdales daughter was the little Pearl. Hester Prynne was punished to stand on the scaffold with the scarlet letter AÂ on her bosom and tell everyone who the father of the baby was. Hester refused to say the name of the father and was mocked by everyone and was humiliated in public. Everyone viewed her as a terrible woman who had done unaccepted things and was supposed to be killed. Hester was not put to death however, but was imprisoned in a bad state. The baby girl was crying and the jailor called a doctor to come and examine them. The doctor that the jailor brought was Roger Chillingworth. He calmed the baby and her mother with pills and had a talk with Hester, his wife. Chillingworth told Hester that if she kept the secret t hat he is her husband, then he will not harm her or the baby. Hester agreed, but refused to tell him who the father of the baby was. Chillingworth was very upset and told her that he will find out who the father was and torture and punish him. After a while, Hester and her baby were set free, but Hester decided to stay in New England and wore the scarlet letter Aevery day and was isolated by the people there. Hester acted very nicely toward other people after she was let go. After seven years, Hester and Pearl, who had grown to be an intelligent young girl, met Mr. Dimmesdale and Chillingworth. At that time, Mr. Dimmesdales health was very terrible and Chillingworth was his doctor. Hester found out that Mr. Dimmesdale was tortured by the guilt in his heart for the past seven years, while Hester lived a fairly good life with her daughter. Chillingworth and Dimmesdale were living together and were thought to be friends. Instead, Chillingworth was revenging against Dimmesdale everyday without noticed by Dimmesdale that he was the husband of Hester. One day when Dimmesdale and Hester met in a forest alone with the little Pearl, they talked about leaving everything behind and going to Europe, where no one knows them, and start a new life and Hester told him that Chillingworth is her husband, who lived with him every day and trying to take a revenge against him. On the Election Day, Dimmesdale gave a great sermon. After that, he went to the scaffold along with Hester and Pearl. He told the public that he was the father and died on there. 2. What was interesting about the plot and the characters? Hester Prynne committed adultery with the pastor, Dimmesdale, and when she was asked by Mr. Dimmesdale, who the father of the child was, she remained silent. Pearl, the child of Hester Prynne, always saw her mother with the scarlet letter Aon her bosom, and did not want to get closer to her mother when Hester without the scarlet letter called her in the forest. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale was a preacher and was thought by everyone that he was holy and honored by everyone, but actually, he was the one who committed adultery, which was not tolerated by the people and was supposed to be killed. Roger Chillingworth, Hesters husband, came to the prison and gave Hester a pill for the child and herself to calm them down and make them feel better, but she refused to take them at first and doubting that her husband was going to take revenge. Mr. Dimmesdale lived with Roger Chillingworth for so long and never knew that Chillingworth was taking revenge on him and torturing him everyday and thoug ht that Chillingworth was his friend. Hester and Chillingworth talked in the woods that they were going to leave New England and move to Europe, where no one knows them, but on the Election day, Chillingworth confessed his sin and died on the scaffold. 3. What insights might you get from the book? There is no secret that can be kept forever, especially when the secret is something that you did wrong and felt guilty about. You will be tortured everyday by the feeling of guilt and it would make you feel much better after you confess what you have done wrong. It was wrong to lie in order to reach success in your life. Revenge is very powerful; it can change a person completely. Revenge does you nothing but make other people and your lives miserable, but love can make everyone happy. A mistake you make in your life is not going to ruin your life unless you cant walk out of the shadow of your mistake. If you change the way you act, other people will feel it and have different opinions about you. Guilty feelings will eventually make you sick and have bad health. You cannot stay healthy with guilt in your heart. 4. Did you like the authors style of writing? No, I dont like the authors style of writing, because its too old English and I cannot really understand it fully. I have a hard time understanding the way sentences were written and it takes me a long time to get through a page. The dialogues were not present day speech, which makes it hard for me to get what they mean. We dont normally speak like that. They order of the words are sometimes rearranged, and I need to read it in the way that I may understand them. The author used too many words that I dont know. I dont like to read what I have a hard time understanding every sentence. I want to enjoy reading the book instead of trying to figure out what every sentence mean. I dont like the writing style of the author who uses English that I have trouble understand. I dont like how the scarlet letter was written. 5. Did you like the book? Why or why not? No, I dont like the book, because it takes me too long to finish the book and I dont actually understand what the story is about. The dialogues were so hard to understand and I am not familiar with the uses of the words in the book. The author uses too many words to describe a simple thing, person, or setting. The story is too wordy with too many unnecessary words. I have trouble understand more than ninety percent of the story. I dont get what the author trying to express most of the time. The words are very difficult for me to understand. The way of speaking is completely different from what I have learned. Even the words that the child spoke were so hard to understand. I felt like I am not educated enough to read and understand this thought provoking book. The more I read; the more confusion I get.
